Irons in the Fire update…

16 12 2009

Weather: High: 28¬ļ (Zomg! Single digits this morning!) & sunny!

So yeah…VERY cold this morning. Captain Coffee is helping thaw me out.
Seems like ages since I did my irons in the fire update, so here’s what I’m working on:

The Archive Universe is finally taking shape. I’ve been spending some time crafting the “rules” and giving some underlying structure to the magic systems and alternate history it will exist within. There’s a base storyline in the Library of Alexandria, and nicely enough, there are enough holes in the history of the Library that I can plant my story in them and let it take root. Love it when Historical records can provide the “What If” for me. ūüôā

As for the individual books under this Universe umbrella:

When The Lights Go Down: Current WC: 107K – In Rewrites.

Shadow of the Wolf : Current WC: 51K – Still in process. Hoping for 75K before starting revisions.

Dark of the Mirror: Current WC: 53K – In revision. Adding in references to Universe and revising some of the plot. Hoping to bulk it up to around 100K

Carrion Dreams: (Book 1) Current WC:  52K РStill writing. Needs revision to put it in alignment with Universe.  [Books 2 & 3 are in outline form]

All Things Fanged & Furry: (Book 1 of the “Houses” Trilogy) Current WC: 50K
In massive re-write mode

All Demons Dread & Dire: (Book 2 of “Houses” Trilogy) In massive re-write. Most of story is getting scrapped to better line up with Book 1 & universe.

Untitled (Book 3 of “Houses” Trilogy) In outline form, but due to be revised in line with Book 2 rewrites.

Archivist’s Tale: Still in planning stage.

Lyra’s Tale: Still in planning stage.

Kenric’s Tale: Still in planning stage.

Other Fiction:

Dreamfic: Currently only a couple of stray chapters in search of a bigger plot.

Librarian stories: “Into the Stacks” is almost finished. Needs two more chapters to be done. Second untitled story is in notes & outline stage.

So yeah. 2010 is gonna be a rather busy year for me. I’m hoping to have WTLGD ready for submission to an editor by January. Then we’ll see where we are.

On the non writing front, I’m getting a little geebly waiting for the next season of Being Human, and the final season of Lost. And the finale for Supernatural. Gonna be rather depressed when both those latter two are done.¬† We’ll see if anything rises to the top to get my obsession piqued again.

Not ready for the Holidays to be here already (Haven’t even figured out what we’re doing for the Solstice on Monday. ) Presents are mostly bought & cards have been sent out, though I’m almost positive I’ve forgotten some people. Sigh. December has been made of fail so far.

Need to get my 2010 list together. I’ve decided to do one of those “101 things to get done this year” lists. Nothing crazy like a typical “bucket list” , but number one on the list is gonna be MOVE TO SEATTLE. Somehow, my hubby and I will make that happen, probably next summer. I’m going stir crazy living where we are. Time for a change of scenery.

Post ChristmasPocalypse! With added Christmas Crud!

26 12 2008

Weather: Schizophrenic! High: 43 Degrees and RAIN??? Just take the ice with you!

So! Christmas has come and gone and at least my sanity is intact. However, the sinus issues I had on Monday have migrated to my chest. So I’m verging on bronchitis, and trying desperately not to get it full blown. I don’t have health insurance so getting sick right now will have financial repercussions.

So,  Sick for the holidays. But I have to admit, we made out like bandits!

First off, let me tell you how amazingly smart my hubby is! He got me not one, but TWO Neil Gaiman books, (M is for Magic and The Graveyard Book), a gorgeous white fleece hoodie with faux fur lining in the hood, a cover for my i-pod, some fantastically warm fleece socks, an Azam Ali CD,  and of course, the annual make-Heidi-cry Christmas card.  We got a lot of neat stuff from the fam, including a 7 quart crockpot that we are DYING to use and some DVDs (Mamma Mia for me (Shut it, I LIKED IT!), The Fountain for Brian, and the BBC miniseries Jekyll (WOO!)), lotsa clothes, NEW BOOTS!!!, and the usual socks, underwear and whatnot. The winner of best gift this year? My mom, who bought us a 500GB external harddrive. SO HAPPY! Now I can get all the music and files off my work computer in one fell swoop!

So, swag aside, the holidays were actually pretty nice. I just wish I felt better. Kinda puts a damper on the day when your snorfling and hacking the whole time.

I’ve grown to dread the holidays anymore.¬† Mostly because the running around is getting taxing. That and the joy of visiting¬† relatives loses some glow when it becomes an obligation. With a light icing of competativeness and a sprinkle of jealous girlfriend syndrome. Yeah, just kinda dampens the “can’t wait to see you” excitement.

Christmas Eve went thusly, first off to Christmas Mass with the in-laws, then we drove off to my mum’s for Christmas dinner and pressies, then back over to Brian’s cousin’s for the Annual Open House.¬† By the time we got there, most were already gone, but we hung out with his cousins, discussing music (his one cousin is in a band) and¬† the usual small talk.¬† Got home around 2:00 am, shagging tired and scratchy-throated and freezing cold. (The temperature dropped 30 degrees throughout the day.)

Christmas day we slept in a bit, opened our present to each other, had a nice breakfast and veged a bit. Later, we went over to Bri’s parent’s for dinner and more presents. My cough had gotten pretty bad by the end of the evening so we headed home, and I dosed myself with some Tussinex, and subsequently was comatose shortly after.

Today, I’m just taking it easy, trying to keep my coughing to a minimum, and trying to get a little cleaning done around the house.¬† The weather is just crappy. It’s warmed up enough to start melting everything, but with everything iced over, the water has nowhere to go.¬† It’s actually supposed to thunderstorm tonight. Welcome to a Midwest Winter!

The new year is on the horizon and I’m formulating my resolutions. There will be a big post in the near future so I can lay out my plans for the next year. It’s kinda do or die time when it comes to a lot of things. Brian has already said his only major plan for next year is “Get the hell outta Dodge”. We’re definitely on the same page there.

DO NOT WANT! (-20 windchill)

22 12 2008

weather: CANADA! TAKE IT BACK! High: 7 degrees. Currently -7 with -20 windchill. Snow later

So. Still having stomach issues.¬† I’ve woken up every morning since last Thursday feeling queasy. And before anyone suggests a specfic possibility, trust me it’s not an option. There is no way I’m preggers. Zero chance.

This seems to be completly stomach centered. I need to see a doctor about it, which should be entertaining considering my lack of health insurance at the moment.

Holiday shopping is DONE thank the benevolent deities. This year has been extremely off kilter. It doesn’t feel like the holidays, our health has been for crap and the weather…well you know about the weather.¬† Now it’s looking like the actual holidays are going to be a bit of a cluster f*ck due to travel c*ck ups and tense emotions. Sigh. I remember when I used to look forward to the holidays.

Have started making the list of things I want to change after the new year, both physical and mental. Two at the top: Dye my hair black and get my ears pierced again. I’ve had mismatched ears for a bit too long now. (One in one ear, two in the other.)¬† So I’m thinking 3 and 3 would be better suited.¬† Further down the list are my long lamented tattoo and possibly an additional piercing to be named later.

On the other things list: Get at least 2 manuscripts finished and submitted. Time to start walking the walk instead of paying it lip service. Move. (This is entirely for our mental health. It’s WAAAY past due). Get myself healthy again. The constant little aches, pains and lingering colds and flu are no longer just inconvenieces.¬† They’re keeping me frompursuing the things I need to do.¬† Get some damn health insurance and get myself checked out in ALL the ways possible.¬† Spend more time with Brian-travel, walking, chatting,….and shagging. AS MUCH AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE. VBEG.

The need to write…and it’s turned into a NEED…is getting hard to ignore. I’m finding myself keeping a Word Window open at all times at work so I can type a bit here and there when I get spare moments. (It’s autosaved to a flashdrive so I can take it home and polish at night) .¬† But here’s the thing, I’m writing instead of taking notes in training (hello college flashback) and am carving out time to write that should be spent on work. I think that says something. Probably that I’m going to get my ass canned if I don’t get some discipline.

Even when I’m at home, I’m pretty much umbilically attached to my laptop (how Giger-esque of me) and have a stack of Moleskines at my side.¬† I guess maybe I finally slid sideways into paying some serious attention to my craft and it’s such a nice chnge from the struggle and writer’s block and self-doubt I’ve had that it’s kind of thrown me.

Wish I could do this full time, without the pressure of money needs. Bri keeps joking that he can’t wait for my first multi million dollar advance so he can finally fullfill his dream of being a kept man. I usually respond dryly that when I get my first book published and the nickles come rolling in, then we’ll talk.¬† (Yes I’m not that naive to think that I’ll EVER get that kind of money. I’d just like to see one of my titles on a shelf. That would make me happy. )

Anyway. Gotta dash. Time to get the hell home and hope whatever is scratching at my throat buggers off overnight. Last thing I need is a recurrence of the flu right before the holidays.

(A lot of the old school Apop fans hate their new stuff, I LOVE IT. )

Have a good evening.

A cold and dreary Wednesday…

10 12 2008

Weather: High 31 degrees and partly sunny. BUT icy conditions out there!

Gah! I like winter but I really hate when it gets icy out! I half skated to the office this morning because there was black ice on all the sidewalks. And of course wearing trainers that have little to no tread doesn’t help. I hate the half-second¬† when you’re trying to course correct because your foot has slipped. Near Heart attack for me every time.

Leverage was made of awesome last night. One of my favorite phrases got used (“I think I just threw up a little in my mouth there”) and got to see Christian Kane be awesomely hot, throwing down and smirking that evil little smirk of his! Yes…it’s a twisted obsession with me and that man.

Devon’s knocking at my skull again. Need to get back to the writing pace I had last week. This week is replete with FALE.

Had a bizarre dream last night. Just a few notes for my memory jogging. Saudra. Welcome Woods. Theresa in a sun dress chasing the phone guy with a Fed Ex box. Who is John (Because I know I didn’t mean my brother.) Why did the shadow have the extended Bali-esque fingernails? (And yes, feel free to back away slowly. I have NO IDEA where this stuff comes from.)

Looks like it’s quitting time.¬† So I’ll be dashing off to the train…make that walking in little mincey steps to the train.¬† Sigh.

The exciting life of a tech drone with pretensions of literary brilliance.

5 12 2008

weather: high: 22 degrees & partly sunny but ZOMG SO COLD THIS MORNING! 10 degrees and -6 windchill!!

The walk in was…bracing is not quite the word. FUCKING COLD seems better.

Spent the morning thawig out in training and part of this afternoon doing some practice runs on the new document management software. Seems very cool. We’ll see how the rest of the office takes to it.

I’m soing some revisioning on “When the Lights Go Down”, mostly to try and make it more a vampire novel with romantic notions and not the opposite, which is not as appealing for me.¬† Every novelist I know goes through a period of “Am I falling into the cliche trap” when it comes to genre fiction.¬† It’s the worry that your writing efforts will result in a novel that falls on the crap side of the genre. Vampires are a glut on the market right now, and unfortunately are targetted by the snark police and the nose holding elitists.¬† Add in the canon nazis and you pretty much are guaranteed to get your novel trashed from some corner. Alas, it’s the nature of the beast, if you’ll pardon the phrase.

I can’t worry about that though. I’m just gonna get the damn thing finished, polish it and hope it’s publishable. I do have other stories on the stove that need my attention as well.

Heading off to our company Holiday Party shortly. Not really looking forward to it, except that it’s time out of the office and an opportunity to go home early. I’m not a big drinker, and I don’t really hang out with my co-workers. Needless to say, there’s not much to be an appeal here. We do have a raffle, which results in cash, so I can’t bitch there.

Tonight is gonna be card writing night. And there is grocery shopping to be done. Woo my life is to be envied in it’s excitement. Meh.

This weekend will probably be Christmas gift making weekend as well. At least there’s some fun involved there! And Bri is gonna take a chance to put up the Christmas tree– Let’s see how long Snoots lets it stand untouched. I’m thinking minutes is the measure of time.

Outta here.

December 2? Bwah? Re-checks Calendar…then cries.

2 12 2008

weather: High: 33 degrees and partly sunny. (It was 20 degrees when we left for work. BRR!)

THis weather has definitey taken the full on plunge into the cold storage cellar. We’re due for more snow tomorrow as well. Sigh. Guess I shouldn’t bitch considering that we have had a pretty decent fall up till now.¬† Can’t believe we’re already at December again. Although considering the sucktastic year it’s been so far, I can’t say I’m sorry to see the end of it.

Gonna take a short break for lunch and see if I can get another thousand words pounded out.

Okay! 1,014 words over lunch… WOO! I had to physically shut the file so I could get back to work. Sigh. If only I could be gainfully employed as a full time writer.¬† ::prays to Saint King for intercession with the publishing deities::

Bri and I are gonna try and tackle some Christmas cards this evening. While I love sending them, I’m not overly fond of the associated writer’s cramp!

Facebook has suddenly turned into the most active place in my wide ranging blogosphere! MAybe because it’s more based on quick comments instead of lengthy¬† posts… Hmm.

Hopefully I’ll be able to get some more writing done tonight. When this kind of momentum starts you really don’t want to let it die out.
